Women's Rights are Human Rights |
|
Promotion of democracy and human rights cannot be dissociated from the question of women’s rights. There is no democracy if women are not allowed to take part in public life on equal terms with men. Women’s rights can not advance if the human rights discourse does not embrace men and women equally, and if fifty percent of a population is systematically marginalized from equal participation in society’s decision-making processes. |

Promotion of women’s rights will remain limited as long as the underlying discrimination against women remains unchallenged including within civil society. Women’s rights issues tend to be discussed only by women, and women’s networks live separate lives from generalist human rights networks. So there is a need to go beyond isolated and limited women’s initiatives and to apply a holistic approach addressing all forms and all levels of discrimination against women. One way of addressing this is through Gender Mainstreaming. The EMHRN works to promote gender mainstreaming among human rights NGOs and civil society groups through its Gender Working Group. |
