EMHRN President Kamel Jendoubi Harassed

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network is deeply worried about acts of vandalism committed against the property of its President Kamel Jendoubi.

On 28 December 2005 Kamel Jendoubi’s private car was deliberately and systematically destroyed by unknown perpetrators while parked in the parking place of his work place in Montreuil. Two days earlier his lap top was stolen from the same car in the centre of Paris.

Kamel Jendoubi is a well known Tunisian human rights activist who was deprived of his Tunisian passport and has been de facto banned from returning to his home country Tunisia since 1994. He is President of the Committee for the Respect of Liberties and Human Rights in Tunisia (CRLDHT), a well known human rights organisation working from France in support of Tunisian human rights activists.

The CRLDHT recently took the lead in organising a successful European advocacy tour for Tunisian human rights activists (12-19 December 2005) during which several participants were threatened or harassed by anonymous perpetrators – methods of intimidation often used by the Tunisian regime against its opponents.

The EMHRN fears that the act of vandalism against Kamel Jendoubi are linked to his human rights activities and fully supports Mr Jendoubi, the CRLDHT and all defenders of public liberties, human rights and democracy in Tunisia.

The EMHRN looks forward to a thorough investigation by the French Authorities into this criminal act.
