President of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network Denied Entrance into Egypt
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Network (EMHRN) is deeply concerned that its President Kamel Jendoubi was denied entrance into Egypt at the airport of Cairo on 14 January 2005.
On 14 January Kamel Jendoubi arrived at Cairo Airport to attend an international meeting on the strengthening of human rights networking in the Arab region. Kamel Jendoubi who is living in France was travelling with a French passport. The Tunisian authorities have since 2002 denied him a Tunisian passport. At the passport control he was informed that his presence in Egypt was not welcome and asked to return to France. He was not given any explanation or reasons for not being allowed to enter Egypt. It was only after the intervention of foreign diplomats and after six hours of waiting and that Mr Kamel Jendoubi was allowed to enter Egypt with his wife. The EMHRN is worried that Kamel Jendoubi’s name figures on a list of people unwelcome in Egypt. The EMHRN is working for promotion and protection of the human rights principles in the Euro-Mediterranean region. The EU and its Mediterranean Partners committed themselves to uphold these principles in the Barcelona Declaration of November 1995 and in the bi-lateral association agreements between the EU and its Mediterranean Partners (of which Egypt is one). The EMHRN asks the Egyptian authorities to make public on which ground Mr Jendoubi was denied entrance into Egypt. It asks the EU and the partners to the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership to ensure and promote the full protection of human rights defenders in the region in the spirit of the Barcelona Declaration and the UN Declaration on the Protection of Human Rights Defenders.
