Algeria - EU Relations

EC-Algeria cooperation goes back to July 1969 when an essentially commercial agreement was signed for a period of five years, linking Algeria to the EEC. With the recent entry into force of the EU-Algeria Association Agreement in September 2005, Algeria has assumed fully-fledged EU-partnership.

Association Agreement

The EU - Algeria Association Agreement was originally signed in Valencia on 22 April 2002. The main elements of the agreement are:

  • Political dialogue and regular economic dialogue;
  • Gradual establishment of free trade area, in line with WTO rules;
  • Clauses on freedom of establishment, liberalisation of services, free movement of capital and the application of Community rules on competition;
  • Clauses in the area of justice and home affairs;
  • Strengthening economic co-operation;
  • Setting up social and cultural co-operation;
  • Financial co-operation;
  • Setting up an Association Council and Association Committee with decision-taking powers.
